Verified against Meta's and OpenAI's own pages, 1 October 2026.
Tom's Guide summed up the split well: "Muse wants to become your personal AI helper. Dots wants to become an always-on member of your team."
Which is cheaper, Muse or ChatGPT dots?
Muse, by a wide margin. Mark Zuckerberg announced it is "free to use for up to 100M tokens per week," and Meta's help center lists two paid plans: Power at $20 a month for 500M tokens a week, and Maximum at $100 a month for 3B tokens a week.
Dots have no free or cheap route. They are included only with ChatGPT Pro ($100, $200 or $500 a month) and Business Premium ($100 per user a month billed annually, with a two-seat minimum). OpenAI says "Your first dot is included" at no extra cost, but has not published how much work that allowance covers.
On Muse, you can also stretch the free tier a long way. Redeeming a referral code within 48 hours of signing up adds 1 billion bonus tokens, ten weeks of free usage. Our guide on how to get 1 billion Muse tokens walks through it.
At equal spend ($100 a month), the comparison gets closer: Muse Maximum versus the entry Pro tier. There the choice comes down to what you need the agent to do.
Which is better for everyday personal tasks?
Muse. Meta designed it around personal errands. Its announcement says Muse "can open a browser, fill out forms, and negotiate on their behalf," and it checks out using Link by Stripe, which gives it a one-time-use card for each purchase. At Connect on 24 September, Meta announced connectors for Walmart, Best Buy, Expedia and Instacart, plus Muse getting "its own email address."
The WhatsApp channel matters more than it sounds. You can hand Muse a task in the same app you already use to message people, with no new habit to build.
Dots can do personal tasks too, but they are priced and designed for work. The help center notes that you "cannot give your dot its own standalone email address" at launch, and texting is a limited US-only beta.
Muse is not flawless at errands. A Tom's Guide shopping test reported that only 3 of 7 prompts worked, so check its work before it buys anything.
Which is better for work?
ChatGPT dots. Three things put them ahead for professional use.
App reach. Dots connect to "over 4,000 apps" through OpenAI's plugin ecosystem. Muse's connector list is much shorter, though Notion and GitHub were added at Connect.
Where your team already works. "You can also message your dot in Slack and Teams." Muse has no Slack or Teams channel.
Permission controls. Dots let you set every kind of action to one of four behaviours: "Take action without asking / Take action if pre-approved / Ask before taking action / Hand off to you." Password changes and money transfers always come back to you.
Investment analyst Adam Crisafulli told CBS that dots look "very much geared toward enterprise/professional users, not everyday consumers, which is probably a relief for Meta." That is the clearest summary of the market split.
For small businesses on a budget, note that Meta launched Muse for Small Business on 29 September in the US and Canada.
Which is safer and more private?
Neither is risk-free, and both companies say so. Meta warns that Muse "may be inaccurate or take unexpected actions." OpenAI says "Dots can still make mistakes, so always review consequential work."
Muse has the more troubling launch record. A YouTuber reported that Muse accepted a Marketplace offer he had not approved and shared his building address, and a reporter alleged it read his Mac Messages without permission. Meta disputes both accounts. Meta also trains on your Muse content by default; switch it off under Settings > Data Controls. Its encrypted Confidential VM is promised for later this year.
Dots have the more published safety work, including a system card appendix. That card also reports unwanted persistence in 17.4% of test runs at maximum reasoning budget. And "You currently cannot view, delete or directly modify individual dot memories," so resetting the whole dot is the only way to clear what it knows.
On paper, dots offer more control. Muse offers less exposure, simply because you can use it without connecting your work accounts.
Can you use Muse or dots in the UK?
Officially, Muse no and dots partly.
Muse is available in the US and Canada only. People in the UK and elsewhere sign up through a US VPN connection, and in our testing Muse keeps working once the VPN is off. Meta's terms do not mention VPNs, but Meta "may suspend or terminate your access to Muse ... at any time, for any reason." Our Muse token guide covers this route and its risks.
Dots exclude Pro users in "the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the UK," but OpenAI makes them "available to Business Premium users across all supported ChatGPT regions." A UK business can get dots today, at a minimum of two Business Premium seats ($200 a month on annual billing).
Which should you choose?
Choose Muse if you want a personal agent for shopping, bookings, forms and errands; you live in the US or Canada; or you are not ready to pay $100 a month. Start free and redeem a referral code for the bonus.
Choose ChatGPT dots if you already pay for ChatGPT Pro, your work runs on Slack or Teams, or you need fine control over what an agent may do without asking.
Choose neither yet if you are a developer who wants a terminal and code tools. Read Muse vs Grok Bot and ChatGPT Dots vs Grok Bot instead.
Try both if you are in the US and on Pro. Muse costs nothing, so the comparison is free.
The verdict
These two look alike (cartoon characters, cloud computers, always on) but they are aimed at different lives. Muse is the better product for most individuals, because it is free and built for personal tasks. Dots are the better product for professionals, because of app reach, team channels and permission design.
The honest caveat is that both are weeks old. Muse has had serious privacy claims made against it, and dots are behind a $100 paywall. Whichever you pick, start with low-stakes tasks and widen its permissions slowly.
